Stanford economist Frank Wolak told the Postal Rate Commission that U S households reduced postage spending to 54.35 dollars in 1994 from 74.26 in 1989, as personal computers and online services lure customers away from post offices despite stamp price rises. The study notes a drop from 19 percent to 10.6 percent of Postal Service sales to households, with about a five billion dollar annual market still existing. The service proposed a one cent rise for first class stamps.
