Hollywood observes the Apollo moon mission with Buck Rogers optimism. Armstrong and Aldrin become symbols of human achievement as networks alter plans to bring live footage and the Nixon call to viewers, inspiring pride and hopeful perspective amid tough times.
Associated Press reports Americans watched the first moon walk with intense focus as millions gathered around TV and radio. Across the country celebrations mixed with reflection as news of the lunar landing sparked global awe and personal moments of wonder.
Widows of Robert Goddard watched as Armstrong, Aldrin and the lunar module reached the moon. Crowds in New York Kennedy Airport and Times Square, plus Anaheim and Las Vegas, celebrated on TVs and radios as leaders from Nixon to Kissinger and monarchs offered praise. In Seattle a moon flag appeared on a mock moon at the Pacific Science Center while fans at a local game sang America the Beautiful.
A muted crowd of one million cheered the Apollo 1s blast off last Wednesday. Barbara Guilford, a 23 year old Cheyenne schoolteacher, laughed and spoke of the moon mission with exhilaration. Others complained about media coverage and radios failing to carry the event, while notable inmates Sirhan Sirhan and James Earl Ray reportedly did not see the landing.
AP reports astronauts Edwin Aldrin and Neil Armstrong showed heart rates from 40 to 125 and 160 beats per minute respectively while on the Moon. Armstrong spiked while loading rock samples into the lunar lander as Dr. Charles Berry noted. Both men normally run 70 to 75 bpm. Descent into Eagle raised Armstrong’s rate briefly to 111 bpm.
Apollo 1 astronauts Noel Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin wear costy lunar suits with life support packs for space survival. The bulky gear shields radiation, temperature extremes, and meteorite impact while providing oxygen and cooling. A London cable tribute to Wernher von Braun closes the piece.
