Connie Hartman tends a diverse Cedar Rapids yard backing Kirkwood Community College while wildlife and a Freedom Festival glow surround her manufactured home. Her long rural ties, mobile home retirement plan, and family roots anchor her in Kirkwood Estates.
Terry Harms and Mary Jo Carlson, now unpacking at a Drake Street home, work beside stone borders as they await inspection to become Kirkwood Estate residents. Rabbits threaten plant beds while residents install wire to protect hosta and impatiens.
In The Neighborhood feature, Kirkwood Estates residents Terry Harms and son Brian value the park for safety upkeep and quiet life. Boeding and wife Amron Rut seek to move to a home elsewhere after five years in a 14 by 70 mobile unit citing cheaper, quieter living. Contact Suzanne Barnes at 319 398 8434.
Ruby Klein, 65, moved into Kirkwood Estates in 1979 and recalls the shift from Tower Terrace Mobile Home Park in Hywoodta to larger lots for double wides. She notes street restrictions eased, speed bumps were added, a recreation area with a ball diamond and hoops emerged, and a storm shelter was built. Her mobile home grew from 14 by 60 to 14 by 68 with two bedrooms, a contrast to her earlier three-bedroom, 15-year-old model. Her now-adult children also live in manufactured housing.
