Prison remodeling may cut need for new facility
Iowa Adult Corrections Director Harry Woods outlined a five year correction program to expand cell size and upgrade security at Fort Madison and Anamosa facilities. The plan adds 78 cells and increases cell size to 96 square feet plus glass doors and electronic locks to reduce contraband and improve privacy. Fort Madison currently houses 894 inmates with violence in Cellblock 20 and will see expanded cells next year at a cost of 395000. The project is funded by a 3 million Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant and 825000 in state funds, aiming to ease urgency for a third prison while monitoring the impact of a new criminal code.
