Remains of 9 Native children returned for burial in South Dakota
The Rosebud Sioux repatriated nine Native American children who died 1880 to 1910 at the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. A youth caravan carried the remains home to the Rosebud Reservation after a six year effort, with ceremonies in Yankton and Whetstone and at a Missouri River landing. The Carlisle school, opened in 1880, enforced assimilation and affected more than 10,000 Indigenous students.
