Arthur H. Lahman 57 long time Cedar Rapids resident died Sunday evening at University Hospitals Iowa City after a lengthy illness. He was born November 9, 1896 in Franklin Grove Illinois and worked at Penick and Ford until retirement last August. Surviving wife Gail a son Richard a daughter Mrs Robert Novak seven grandchildren two brothers Clifford Ida Grove and Clair Akron Ohio a sister Miss Martha Lahman Mt. Vernon. A son Staff Sgt Donald Lahman was killed in a Blythe California air crash March 17, 1943. Burial at Linwood cemetery with funeral services in Janeba funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. DST. visitation after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Louis J Koutnik 76 of 2322 Twenty sixth Street NW Cedar Rapids died at home at 7 20 a m Sunday after a lingering illness He was born in Czechoslovakia December 10 1877 A retired truck gardener he is survived by three sisters Mrs Josephine Klepac Miss Mary Koutnik and Miss Ann a Koutnik and a brother John all of Cedar Rapids He was a charter member of the Cadets of St George No 45 of St Wenceslaus church Services will be held 9 30 a m Wednesday at Kuba Funeral Home 10 a m at St Wenceslaus with Rev Anthony W Chihak Father Chihak and the Cadets for St George will recite the Rosary at 7 30 p m Tuesday at the funeral home Friends may call Tuesday.

Hassett is free on 7000 bond on counts of conspiracy and evasion of state income taxes. Suspensions ordered Saturday by District Judge IR L. McCord.
Actress Joan O'Brien aged 18 and singer William Strange aged 23 wed on Sunday after meeting as singing partners two years ago on a radio program. O'Brien appears on the Bob Crosby show, while Strange performs on the Tennessee Ernie show and Hometown Jamboree.
Two men pleaded guilty to drunk driving in district court Monday. Glenn F. Eastridge, 51, of Luverne, faces sentencing Wednesday at 10 AM after a car struck Gerald C. Kula’s parked truck. Eastridge was arrested in the 3300 block of Oakland Road NE following pursuit. James O. Callahan, 31, Davenport, changed his plea from not guilty and was fined 300 dollars plus costs after a chase from Marion to Cedar Rapids on July 7.
Charles T. Biggs aged 60 of 1044 Tenth avenue SE pled guilty to assault with intent to commit great bodily injury. He received a suspended three month sentence to Linn county jail after beating his wife Lucille with a board on July 10. she required hospital treatment for head injuries. Judge Floyd Philbrick suspended the sentence on condition of good behavior.
Judgment for 39.50 in a suit to recover costs of radio advertising awarded to Johnson County Broadcasting Company Monday against Mac's Sugar Bowl of Mt. Vernon. The plaintiff owns and operates station KXIC in Iowa City.
Jami son reports a prowler stole a watch and a jackknife from the Marion Jamison home on Marion route 2 over the weekend. Entry was through an unlocked door while Jamison was away. A divorce suit against Harold Ammons was dismissed Saturday by Helen Ammons.

Major John Eisenhower son of the President has been assigned brief duty as a military aide at the White House. He will leave Fort Benning around July 22 to join the White House military liaison office and will depart about August 10 for Fort Leavenworth Kansas to attend the army command general staff college.
A Cedar Rapids medical spokesman said a run on gamma globulin during polio season exhausted city and county supplies. He noted gamma globulin lacks efficacy in polio prevention or treatment and contrasts with the Salk vaccine now under development.

Blair Moody was discharged from Hancock Michigan hospital after a three week bout with virus pneumonia. The former senator, who fell ill while campaigning in northern Michigan for the Democratic senatorial nomination, credited his unusual personal stamina for the recovery.
New York AP The American Telephone and Telegraph Company announced plans to build an underwater cable system connecting Alaska with all 48 states. The project should be finished by 1956 and will serve public and defense needs with faster communication between Alaska and the mainland. Currently Alaska uses 13 radio and land line circuits deemed inadequate for future traffic.
Senator Fulbright proposes that President Eisenhower resign should Democrats win control of Congress in November to allow one party rule and avoid a divided government. He recalled a 1946 call to resign when Republicans took over. He said no clear challenger has emerged to Adlai Stevenson as Democratic presidential contender.

Robert Ramey of 1430 Fo Street SW led Cedar Rapids police on an 18 block chase Saturday night before crashing into a parked car at 723 Eighteenth Street. He fled on foot but was arrested at 8 am Sunday. Ramey was treated at St Luke's Hospital for broken ribs and a damaged ankle and will face charges including reckless driving leaving the scene and running a stop sign.
A 350 year old Rubens portrait of Archduke Albert of Austria was recovered undamaged from Lloyd Galloway's home in San Francisco after police linked him to the De Young Museum theft. Galloway, an unemployed teamster, claimed ignorance of the painting’s value while authorities said the work was wrapped as a pincushion. Experts value the piece at 40 000 to 100 000 dollars.
HALTOM CITY Texas citizens violated a water prohibition prompting a brief shutoff from 1 to 4 pm. Mayor Virgil Goodman defended the measure saying it would be unpopular but necessary to conserve supply.
