President Roosevelt, amid a midnight Chicago stadium crowd of 20 000, radioed from the White House that he would accept a third term if drafted, urging that democracy face overriding dangers and warning against appeasement. He said campaigning would be limited by wartime urgency and stressed unity in national defense.
In a heartfelt message President Franklin D. Roosevelt discusses his mixed feelings about retirement and conscience. He recalls his 1936 election decision to relinquish power, wartime pressures, neutrality, defense planning, and the good neighbor policy as World War II looms.

Ernest Huffman of Mount Vernon Avenue faces charges of driving with faulty brakes and operating without a license after a Mount Vernon Avenue crash at 5 10 p m involving a Cedar Rapids truck driven by Paul Rapa. No injuries reported. Huffman chose three days in jail over a $10 fine and must answer the bad brakes charge next Tuesday.
Two Iowa escaped convicts identified as Ivan Sullivan and Lowell Haenze robbed the Diller State Bank in Diller Nebraska. They forced three employees at pistol point, took cash from tills and vault, and fled with about $5000. The trio had earlier robbed the Wilber Nebraska bank and Winthrop Minnesota bank.
The German government said reprisals will target individuals in Holland believed connected to policies in the Dutch East and West Indies. German subjects interned by the Dutch in these colonies remain in concentration camps and may prompt further actions.

Cedar Rapids and Marion police and the sheriff press charges against a driver after an 80 mph pursuit down First avenue. The car forced three others into ditches, tossed a whisky bottle, struck Patrolman F N Jacobs in the face and fled, leaving a woman passenger identified as Anna Upton 28 of Los Angeles. She was fined $25 and costs by Judge Harry S Johnson.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Henry A. Wallace will meet with President Roosevelt at the White House next Thursday to decide his campaign role. He plans a brief Des Moines vacation and likely will deliver his acceptance speech there later this month. He defended the nomination as a democratic convention and spoke of campaign interest and the need for strong leadership amid world affairs.
James A. Farley will retire as Democratic National Committee chairman on August 17 to take an attractive private business offer likely as head of the New York Yankees.
