Rains Could Lift Iowa Corn Crop Beyond Government Estimate
Iowa crop officials noted rains since July 1 may push the 1934 corn yield above the government estimate of 324 million bushels. The bulletin cited great gains in heavy producing counties with late corn catching up while some southwest and south central counties faced heat drought and chinch bugs. In northern and central counties progress was good though southern areas suffered deterioration and hay shipments rose to feed livestock.

Tells Stock Men How To Overcome Lack Of Roughage
Rex Beresford, livestock feeding specialist at Iowa State College, says cattle can finish in 30 to 60 days longer with less hay. A higher protein supplement lets corn and cob meal replace roughage, cutting roughage by half and possibly ending it in the final weeks. He urges finishing high quality cattle even with higher feed costs, noting the spread between half-fat and highly finished cattle allows paying more for corn.
