Back-packing program teaches Linn County youth outdoors
More than 100 Linn county youngsters ages nine to twelve take part in weekly summer back-packing trips run by the extension service with HACAP recruitment. The eight week program at Yellow River Forest near Waterville aims to foster appreciation for nature and ecology through light packs, trout streams, and tented camping guided by college aides and local staff. Funding comes from Cedar Rapids transportation grants and child nutrition funds, with three prior trips in 1975 to Decorah Nordic Fest Amana Colonies and Des Moines to meet Gov. Ray.
