Landfill Site 1 Closes After 41 Years in Cedar Rapids
The last load of garbage will pass through Landfill Site 1 gates at 2 p.m. on July 29 ending 41 years of dumping near the Cedar River. Recycling remains available for compost metal tires and appliances while Site 2 is prepared to reopen at Highway 13 and County Road A56.

Landfill Site 1 opened in 1965 on 2250 A St SW and will close July 29 2006. It holds about 6.15 million tons of waste and rises to 915 feet. Beginning July 31 Site 2 will accept Linn County solid waste, increasing Marion truck traffic on routes 151 13 and 100. A cap of 750000 tons will be spread atop the mound with 30 years of monitoring and ground cover.
