Four admirals clash over SALT II in Senate testimony
Washington AP Four retired admirals and a former SAC commander debated the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union in Senate testimony. Moorer and Zumwalt warned the pact could leave the United States inferior and cap Soviet gains, while Kidd Gaylor and Dougherty argued the treaty offers a useful pause for modernization and arms control. The discussion covered Backfire missiles, verification, and broader strategic balance amid Carter administration criticism.

Judge blocks FDA from marketing questionable nonprescription drugs
U.S. District Senior Judge John J. Sirica ruled the FDA cannot allow any nonprescription drug onto the market if safety or effectiveness is in doubt. The decision, issued late Monday, partially nullifies part of the agency's marketing approval process. The health ruling came from a suit filed by the Health Research Group, tied to Ralph Nader. The ruling does not force removal of existing products.
