Construction Starts on SUI News Building

Ground broken at the University of Iowa for the first unit of the communications center. Journalism students, faculty and alumni served as organizers with James McNair, Prof. Edward F. Mason, and Harry Boyd each representing their group. Morehead Construction will build it in Cedar Rapids with Carstens Brothers handling plumbing and heating.

Gunmen Take 80 Dollars in Forker Pharmacy Holdup

In Des Moines two shabby gunmen robbed Forker Pharmacy Monday night taking about 80 dollars from a cash register. Operator Hubert M. Forker and a youth assistant were present. the pair fled on foot after demanding money and asking about a safe.

FFA Members Chosen as Ushers for Iowa State Fair

One hundred Iowa FFA members will serve as ushers for afternoon and evening shows during the ten day Iowa State Fair August 25 to September 3. Applicants are to come from FFA chapters statewide via their vocational agriculture teachers. Selected youths will reside in the fair's FFA dormitory and dine on the grounds.

Flyer Spots Farmer Cattle in Cornfield

In Muscatine County a farmer’s cows wandered into a cornfield after a low flying plane startled the farmer. The pilot shouted a warning which led the emergency unit to respond. Investigation found the message “Your cows are in the cornfield, Mac.”

Extortion Charge Filed Against Former Iowan

Charles City AP reports federal extortion charges filed against William Harold Dolph 36 formerly of Colwell Iowa. Dolph to be returned from Richland Washington for prosecution in the Northern District. He allegedly sent letters to his ex wife Elvie and her parents threatening to kill them unless they provided an accounting.

Security Benefits In Iowa Rise With Federal Amendment

Iowa's amended old age and survivors insurance totals 1,604,206 dollars monthly as of March 1 with 48,978 beneficiaries. Des Moines SSA reports six month activity since the Aug. 28, 1950 amendment, noting increases from 37,500 beneficiaries and 700,000 dollars monthly in August 1950 to larger figures in February, with detailed classifications for retired workers, their wives and dependents, children, widows, and dependent parents.

Speedy Driver Loses Two Races with Law

An Amboy New Jersey man Herman Hahn faced speeding and eluding charges after his car was clocked at 68 mph by Glenwood City Marshal J C Nelson. Hahn fled while the mayor was out and later was tracked toward Plattsmouth Nebraska by Sheriff Tom Solomon. He paid a 17.50 fine for speeding, then faced an eluding charge in Plattsmouth.

Club show entries due for Marengo 4-H show

Iowa County 4-H entries must be submitted and fees paid by July 30. Cal Perrin warns club members of the costs: two dollars per head of cattle or litter of swine, one dollar for pens of three pigs or lambs, and fifty cents for individual pigs and lambs.

ISUI Economic Workshop Praised by Its Originator

G Derwood Baker professor at New York University praised the ISUI economic workshops. He noted teachers planned an adult program on inflation and emphasized basic facts. Baker said the Joint Council on Economic Education aims to fill gaps with training and materials and will soon establish a teacher resource center.

Car Hits Bridge, Driver Killed Near Iowa City

Richard William Lough, 22, of Floris Iowa, died after losing control of his car and slamming into a bridge railing on Highway 218 fourteen miles south of Iowa City. The crash sheared a bridge post and left side railing, leaving Lough pinned in the vehicle until transport to University Hospitals where he died shortly after arrival.

Manchester Girl Hurt At Stock Car Races

A 12-year-old Manchester girl suffered a fractured leg and facial injuries in a freak accident at Farley during stock car races. A wheel flew from a racing car, struck a truck carrying Sandra Mesch her mother and her two year-old brother Paul, knocking them down. Mrs Mesch and Paul escaped unharmed. Sandra was hospitalized in Manchester.

Six More Inducted From Johnson County

Six Johnson county men reported Monday at Des Moines for induction into the armed services. The group, the smallest sent to Des Moines since last September, includes Darrell J. Hansen of West Liberty, Melvin J. Holubar of Solon, David A. Lehman of Solon, George T. Parsons of Iowa City, John S. Peters of Iowa City, and Bernard A. O Connor of Iowa City. They were to be sent to Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Mrs William L Hoffman remains a patient at Mercy hospital Cedar Rapids after undergoing surgery recently. The exact date of the operation is not disclosed and visiting information is pending.
