War debt talks and political shifts in Europe and Iowa arts
A Sunday roundup reports Britain seeking to resume war debt payments to the United States amid France’s initial resistance. Lord Lothian’s Paris talks aim to find payment ways. The piece notes Time magazine retractions, Paris espionage arrests, and U.S. restrictions on loans to debt-defaulters. It highlights an Iowa University fine arts festival featuring Verdi Requiem and a Tibbett concert. A Cedar Rapids reader criticizes the city’s dogtown nickname, praises trees over editors, and comments on local elm and box elder removals tied to pest control. A Portland Oregonian jab at Iowa’s cigar tax law prompts a Salem reader to defend Iowa’s stance.
