Swingtime Canteen at Old Creamery Theatre Studio

Reborn Freelance writer AMANA reports Swingtime Canteen a light WWII era revue at Old Creamery Theatre Company. An almost all female band led by Marian Ames delivers 34 songs with strong vocal turns from Katrina Kmak and Deborah Kennedy. The eight performers showcase humor and charm while the cast aims to entertain troops with brisk numbers and a cappella closers. The production runs through August 26.

Larry the sign painter and his lasting signs

Dave Rasdal profiles Larry, a Navy Seabee turned sign painter from Cedar Rapids, who painted for firms in Des Moines and Waterloo, designed the eternal flame on the Veterans Memorial Building, and created a neon Campbell's Soup sign contest piece. He recalls meeting his wife Marlene in Fort Dodge, a 52 year marriage with nine children, and notes his shift from Nesper to Bob Smythe Sign Co. and later mergers. He still seeks new ideas, sometimes waking at night with visions to make signs stand out.
