Court bars enforcement of Pledge of Allegiance law

A federal court permanently enjoined Pennsylvania education officials from enforcing a state law that requires daily Pledge or national anthem recitation. Judge Robert Kelly ruled the mandate violates students’ First Amendment rights, noting compulsory expression undermines free speech. Parents must be notified when students decline, a provision critics say deters exercising rights.
