Conlin disclosed paying no state income tax in 1981 while Cutler echoed a stockbroker's remark that if opponent Cooper Evans paid $116000 in taxes he is "too dumb to be in Congress." Ray commented on the contrasting stances, saying "it's something to listen to."

Iowa Gov. Robert Ray says he is unhappy with Secretary of State designate George Shultz remarks that a long term grain sales agreement with the Soviet Union would send the wrong signal. The Iowa GOP committee meets Saturday in Coralville to discuss the issue. Ray notes Reagan's embargo lift and Russia's grain sources while urging careful market use.
