Iran shutters borders to thwart plot suspects
Iran ordered the borders closed for 48 hours to prevent conspirators from escaping the plot against Ayatollah Khomeini's regime. Tehran radio said the trial of about 500 detainees will start soon as Pars News Agency confirmed arrivals and departures across land air and sea are halted temporarily. Hasan Habibi said Turkey has been asked to extradite two Iranian air force lieutenants who flew to Turkey seeking asylum. President Bani Sadr met with Khomeini and said the trial would commence today or Thursday.

The move coincides with Vietnam’s involvement in Kampuchea and Laos, with concerns about economic strain and regional tensions. Cam Ranh Bay’s isolation and lack of civilian traffic are noted as favorable for Soviet activities 180 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City.
