Cedar Rapids Quadrant system origins and evolution
The 1882 decision by Cedar Rapids City Council set the quadrant system dividing the city by river and First Avenue a change from the older east west street alignment. Originating with Kingston and Cedar Rapids on opposite river sides in the 1840s, the new layout replaced street names with numbered designations to simplify navigation. By 1934 1935 the quadrant scheme was fully in use, aiding city staff and reflecting shifts after bridges linked the river.
