Record admissions put pressure on Iowa prisons
Iowa faced a record 4,920 admissions to state prisons in the year ending June 30, 2001, up from 4,456. Officials say new court commitments and rising revocations fuel the gain, with 112 percent of capacity used and 7,727 inmates overall. Construction at Fort Madison and Oakdale may delay new needs, but continued net gains could prompt expansion in 2002.
