Administrator Hiawatha taps Joe Smith for city post
Joe Smith, 39, currently Marengo city administrator, will take over day-to-day administration of Hiawatha on August 7. He signed the two year contract Friday and will remain at Marengo until just before assuming the Hiawatha duties. The City Council approved his appointment and new ordinances governing the position. The starting salary is 50000 with a 3500 increase after one year. Oliver Merriam resigned in December to be replaced. Water rate increases approved by the Water Board go into effect July 1, raising charges by five cents per 1000 gallons for the first block and ten cents per 1000 gallons thereafter. Residential rates rise to 4.40 per 1000 gallons for 0 to 1000 gallons and 1.85 per 1000 gallons thereafter. Commercial and business rates vary by meter size.
