Livestock Producers Face Rat and Feed Shortages in 1933
The July USDA crop board report warns livestock producers from Ohio to the Pacific coast face a severe feed crisis due to the record drought and high temperatures. Pasture and range feeds are at record lows, oats and barley yields will be the smallest since 1900, and hay supplies are tight. Expected corn and straw shortages threaten cattle, sheep, and hog sectors, prompting movement to markets and heavy marketing of cows. Producers are urged to conserve feeds and adjust pig and sow production to limited supplies, with hogs likely sold young and lambs sold as the fall approaches.
