kestrel nesting boxes linger as worthwhile effort in Iowa
Retired Iowa DNR wildlife technician Pat Schlarbaum recalls kestrels as the state’s smallest hawk facing population swings over four decades. Nesting boxes on highway signs, a joint DNR and DOT program begun in the 1980s, reduced predation and aided nesting when tree cavities were scarce. The program faded in the mid 2010s, yet boxes persist in Story and Boone counties and on power poles. Dinsmore notes kestrels remain reduced but capable of growth, making continued boxes valuable.
