Graf Brewery and tunnels shape Iowa City history
The Graf brothers expanded what became Graf Bottling Works after taking over Iowa City Mineral Springs Bottling Works from their mother Anne. The 1917 Prohibition era sale led to the building’s repurposing, later becoming Brewery Square and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Historic tunnels beneath the brewery drew explorers in 1950, 2000, and 2023 as archaeologists used 3D laser scanning to map the caverns.
