Ray Signs Iowa Benefits Package Expanded Salaries

Gov Robert D Ray signed a sweeping measure to boost state salaries and IPERS benefits at a cost over 40 million dollars. It raises living cost allowances for most state workers from seven to ten percent and funds Regents salary hikes. The plan increases IPERS employer contributions by 4 percent and covers agency costs plus school district IPERS payments.

DES MOINES AP Bill H Myers a Davenport alderman and builder was named Monday to the state Commission on Compensation by Lt Gov Arthur Neu The appointment is for a five year term held previously by William D Severin of Cedar Falls The commission reviews compensation paid state officials and judges and makes recommendations on pay to the governor and the legislature 60 who died at University hospitals in Iowa City after the motorcycle he drove struck a car on highway 220 near South Amana Born Oct 1 1914 at Carnsworth he graduated from Grinnell college and was married to Margaret Barry July 2 1938 at Victor He served in the navy and was employed by Amana Refrigeration 23 years Surviving include his wife his mother Mrs Adalene Tuttle a son Richard A Marengo two sisters Mrs Melvin Stevens Victor and Mrs James Richardson Coal Valley Ill one brother Max Ringler Brooklyn and seven grandchildren

Inmate Gregory Stone Found Dead at Fort Madison Penitentiary

Gregory Eugene Stone, 21, of Des Moines, was found hanging in his cell at Fort Madison after guards completed the routine nightly check. He died at the prison hospital despite revival efforts. Authorities say it appears to be a suicide. investigations by the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation and prison officials are ongoing. Stone entered the system in 1969 for robbery with aggravation, later receiving a three year sentence for escape, and was transferred to the state penitentiary in April 1974.
