McGregor city council debated grain terminal traffic from a Des Moines firm, noting 100 to 135 trucks daily from Minnesota and backups clogging Highways 13 and 18. Mayor Corlett urged stricter engine-idling enforcement and city ordinances, while plans were made to repurpose an old baseball diamond as a waiting-truck parking lot.
Esther Helgerson 61 of Clermont died in a two car crash 1% miles northwest of Lynxville Wisconsin on highway 35. Six others were hospitalized in La Crosse in critical condition including her husband Harry Helgerson 68 Vera Crady and her four children Mark Cheryl Joseph and Paula. Funeral arrangements are pending at Schutte Funeral Home in Postville.
Independence officials reviewed the proposed 1972 expenditures for Peoples Memorial Hospital at $1,434,981. The plan includes a $104,000 two mill levy, marking a 5.4 percent rise from 1971. A public hearing is tentatively set for August 10 in the new hospital building.
