Wilson Wins Team Crown At Festival

Wilson and Company dominated the Allied Industrial League all-sports festival at Ellis Park. They won the softball tourney, golf, and the dart throw, tied for first in class B, and captured the big traveling trophy at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the YMCA along with multiple other trophies.

Gazette Tennis Reach Semis in Two Divisions

The Gazette City junior tennis competition reached the semifinal stage in both singles and doubles for the 18 and under division over the weekend. In mixed doubles, Jerry Spilman and Mary Kay Trosky advanced with a 15-13 upset in the second round over Jim Beurle and Susan Wadell.

Subpoena Norris For Ring Probe

Jim Norris former president of the International Boxing Club received a grand jury subpoena to appear at the boxing investigation on September 16. District Attorney Frank Hogan said he had sought Norris since June for questioning though Norris claimed poor health but later said he would be available. A Hogan spokesman noted Norris could contest the subpoena on the return date on health grounds.

Cedar Rapids Athletics top Franklin All-Stars 3 1 in nine

Cedar Rapids Athletics defeated the Franklin All-Stars 3 to 1 in a nine inning baseball game at Daniels Park Sunday afternoon. Bob Mouma and Mike Hall shared pitching duties for CR Athletics with Cornwall catching. Franklin’s pitchers were Toman and Tanner catching.

Don White of Keokuk won the accident scarred 150 mile Iowa International stock car race in record time at Des Moines before 10 300 spectators. He finished in 2 hours 55 minutes 27.36 seconds erasing last year’s mark by about six seconds. Eighteen of the original 33 cars started finished on the track.
