Climate shift redefines plant zones and Midwestern farming
The 2023 USDA update moves areas up by half a zone as average minimums rise. Iowa's zones shift locally from 5a to 6a in places, prompting farmers like Evergreen Hill and Colony Acres to adapt with crossover planting plans and wind protection. Experts warn warming will intensify, especially in the Upper Midwest, requiring new fruit tree strategies and flexible cropping.
