Grandma Mulherin’s Book of Blessings inspires a Cedar Rapids writer
Lorrenne Mulherin 83 of Cedar Rapids wrote 46 stories rooted in farm life near Palo. Her book A Grandmother's Book of Blessings has sold nearly 300 copies and spurred inspirational talks across Eastern Iowa. Her late husband Glen died in 1996 after decades of farming and kennel work.

Iowa reports rise in infectious diseases in 2010
The Iowa Department of Public Health released the 2010 Disease Report showing over 60 000 infectious disease reports in 2010, up from about 53 000 in 2009 and 50 000 in 2008. Mumps rose 73 percent and pertussis jumped 229 percent with the majority of pertussis cases among 5 to 14 year olds.

Quinlisk notes total pertussis hospitalizations may be higher as many adults go undiagnosed. She recalls children have died in Iowa and urges adults to get a tetanus booster to shield young children. Three unusual diseases were reported last year Hansen's disease in a 40 year old man toxic shock syndrome in a 19 year old woman and tetanus in a 7 year old boy.
