Linn supervisors report travel expenses have grown by 75 percent over the past four years. The board cites increased travel to meetings and conferences as the main factor, with several trips funded for official duties and county representation.
Iowa officials report Linn County supervisors spent 14,419 on out-of-state travel in fiscal 2005, including partial costs for a Honolulu National Association of Counties conference. Polk County turnout was 6,974, Johnson County budgets 3,000 for NAC trips, amid rising travel costs in a tight county budget.

Gov. Tom Vilsack will review Department of Human Services records on how Evelyn Miller’s case was managed before her murder in Floyd County. DHS says the investigation is under scrutiny, and officials confirm contact with Evelyn’s family prior to the July 1 disappearance and July 6 Cedar River death. No charges have been filed.
Judy Smith and other volunteers in a landmark hormone study say hot flashes returned after stopping the pills. A JAMA survey led by Dr. Judith Ockene finds hormones may postpone symptoms rather than prevent them and shows menopause lasting longer than expected, with many lingering into their 60s and 70s.
In July 2002 researchers from the Women’s Health Initiative cautioned that estrogen progestin pills sold as Prempro may raise risks of heart attack breast cancer and stroke. Hormone supplements once widely prescribed for menopausal symptoms declined after the findings were released.
Hotel owner Lincoln McIlravy urges Coralville officials to create a train horn quiet zone by the 25th Avenue crossing. He notes the policy would aid nearby businesses and residents while maintaining safety as trains approach the crossing within a few hundred yards.
