Discrimination Day Lesson Frightens Iowa Pupils
Rural third grade teacher Darald Elliott in Riceville Iowa conducted a two day discrimination lesson by dividing pupils into blue and brown eye groups. The exercise triggered real anger and despair in the inferior group while the superior group felt empowered. Pupils’ grades suffered when devalued but some improved on the privileged day. The class aged eight and nine responded with statements about not wanting to be judged by skin color. The lesson followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and reflected limited prior exposure to people of color in the community.
