Marie Newberry, 69, fired from Lockheed aerospace plant after defying orders to stop feeding stray cats. IAM is seeking her reinstatement citing her 45 years of exemplary service. Spokesman says cat population at the plant has grown into the triple figures.
Iowa Department of Transportation operates the first state affiliated day care in Ames with 125 children daily, improving employee morale and performance. A second center may open at Woodward State Hospital and School, serving about 120 of 1,000 hospital workers, with plans for 24 hour and sick care if successful.
U.S. officials report that an Israeli invented explosive armor adopted by Moscow makes many Soviet tanks nearly invulnerable to typical anti-tank weapons. Critics question the armor’s value and why the United States has not adopted it. Military leaders warn only heavy guns can defeat it, leaving aircraft and infantry at risk in a surprise Soviet assault.

An eight-month-old girl, Emily Klonoski of Scranton, Pa., underwent a 54-hour operation at the Mayo Clinic to remove a fist-sized benign tumor from her heart. Surgeon team led by Dr. Gordon Danielson said the tumor, invading the right ventricle, was the largest they had removed. the baby returned home to Pennsylvania with a near normal outlook.
National Nude Weekend draws Iowans Naturally club members in Cedar Rapids and Marion to a Saturday evening barbecue and a sunbathing session in undisclosed metro backyards. Larry of Marion says nudism is enjoyable and nonsexual, with ASA affiliation guiding family friendly outings and values.
