The University of Iowa honors 1,120 liberal arts dean's list students for the second semester, with at least 12 credit hours and a 3.50 GPA. East Iowa names include Amana Mary Moessner Kirk Setzer Belle Plaine Barbara Hadenfeldt Joanne Severson and many Cedar Rapids, Brooklyn, and nearby residents.
Four Iowa lives ended in a busy weekend of crashes across the state. Traer youth Kelvin Lynn Weaver, 17, died after a Tama county gravel road crash southeast of Traer. Cedar Rapids saw Jeffrey L. Flint, 22, die as his car collided with another. Albia mourned Weston Baker, 18, in a north edge crash tied to a tractor upset near Lowden where Harry Hamdorf, 58, died days later in hospital.
A stillborn infant delivered Sunday from a Des Moines woman injured in a Saturday night one car crash. Dr. Robert Connair and officer Jon Rogerson said the fetus at eight months would classify the death as a traffic fatality. Pamela Beeler, 18, was hurt when brakes failed and her car struck a house. She underwent surgery and remained in fair condition Sunday night.
INDEPENDENCE Seven traffic charges were filed against Cecil Pillard 16 of rural Brandon Saturday night after a high speed chase. Buchanan County Sheriff Fred Beier spotted the Pillard car parked near the road at 9 30 p.m. Pillard sped up to 90 mph and fled north through Quasqueton before a deputy roadblock halted him. Pillard faces two counts of speeding failure to stop for a stop sign failure to stop for an emergency vehicle reckless driving littering a public highway and possession of beer. Five other youths in the car were charged with possession of beer.
Decorah reports three weekend accidents investigated by county and city law officers. Penny Palmer, 21, of Hopkins Minnesota, treated for rib injuries after a one car crash four miles north of Decorah on highway 52. Stephen Wiste, 25, of Hopkins, lost control driving. Thomas Buhr, 52, of Westgate was charged with failure to have control after a second one car crash near Calmar on highway 150. Doris Quamn, 28, of Decorah charged with failure to have control after backing into a parked car on Division Street.
Johnson county grand jury members named for alleged gratuities to officials are the only ones who can pursue contempt against What Cheer editor Charles Dunham who printed their names. Judge Osmundson had ordered suppression and records impounded, while Judge Vietor said only the indicted persons may sue for contempt.
A 37 year old man from Louisville Kentucky was struck by a car while on highway 30 three miles south of Elberon and sustained a fractured leg and abrasions. He was taken to Marshalltown then Iowa City hospitals. The incident involved two westbound cars and wet pavement on Salt Creek bridge. The driver of the second car was Richard L Hanson of Perry.
