Green leaves fix nitrogen and carbon dioxide via chlorophyll
In a Bureau of Chemistry and Soils lab, Burk and Lineweaver show green plants use chlorophyll and enzymes to fix carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. Energy from sun powers the cycle, enabling repeated use of chlorophyll. Nitrogen fixation then requires energy from these carbohydrates, with plants capable of fixing nitrogen while animals cannot.
