Traditional pensions disappear rapidly in U S employers shift to 401(k) plans
A Washington Times study by EBRI and Mercer finds nearly two thirds of employers with traditional pensions have closed or frozen plans for new hires or all workers within two years. The shift spans troubled and healthy firms like IBM and Verizon, with many offsetting losses by boosting 401(k) contributions. Critics argue 401(k)s fail to replace pensions fully and raise risk for retirees.
