Stocks Edge Higher In Uneven Friday Trading

The Dow rose 2.97 to 874.84 as gains outpaced losses in a choppy session. After an early dip sparked by a rate hike at First National City Bank, prices recovered on hopes the move was temporary. Howard Johnson jumped to 14 7/8 as the company forecast a 50 percent rise in second quarter earnings.

Cedar Rapids hog market falls as weights affect prices

The Cedar Rapids market shows lower Friday hog prices with bulk butchers 210 to 240 lbs at 55.00 to 55.50 per cwt and lighter sows at 47.00 to 47.50. Heavier groups face discounts, while steer and heifer price lists from high to standard grades appear alongside grain and egg price notes from Des Moines and Joliet.

Chicago Friday grain futures rose with wheat 17 to 18 percent, corn 5 to 10, oats 44 to 54, and soybeans 9 to 20. Rumors of Soviet demand and weather-reduced USSR winter wheat output fueled buying by local traders and commission houses on the floor.

Kirkwood Board Approves New Parking Lot Designs

Kirkwood Community College directors unanimously approved a terraced gravel parking lot plan behind Iowa Hall with 275 spaces and a $47,172 cost. Concrete options with storm sewers would reach $192,565, beyond the $50,000 available. Bids open July 18 with a public hearing set for August 7.

Maddox Sentenced To Year for Assault

Robert L. Maddox Jr. received up to a year in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to a reduced assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm. He had been charged with robbery with aggravation over stealing $190 in cash and $500 in heroin from Charles McDonough in Cedar Rapids. McDonough faced a separate drug charge later dismissed.

Midtown Skyscraper Fire Injures Eleven Workers

A two alarm fire in a midtown New York skyscraper at 40 W 57th St near Sixth Ave sent hundreds of workers fleeing in smoke. Firefighters battled the blaze for 90 minutes, five were hospitalized, and six others were treated for smoke inhalation. A firefighter suffered a broken wrist in a fall.

Grinnell Man Killed in Crash Near Montezuma

Grinnell resident Terry Lee Montgomery 27 died in a motorcycle accident on Highway 63 one mile north of Montezuma. Troopers believe he was speeding when he lost control, causing the bike to strike two culverts and a reflector pole. Officials found his body about six hours after death.

Des Moines Hog Prices Drift Lower In Quiet Trade

In Des Moines buyers were light Friday with overall demand weak. No. 1–3 200–230 lb butchers sold about 54.50 to 55.50, 230–250 lb 54.00 to 55.25, heavier butchers 51.50 to 54.00 for 270–300 lb, and sows steady to 48.00 for 270–330 lb. Estimates show Friday around 40,000 head, with Thursday at 57,000 and the year-ago week at 18,000.

Robbery Charge Filed Against local man Fitzgerald

Robert W. Fitzgerald, 23, of 919 Eighth Street SE, was charged with robbery with aggravation after authorities say he held up the Prehop One Hour Cleaners at 179 Jacolyn Drive NW on June 21, taking between $50 and $100 at knifepoint. He was arrested Friday.
