Iowa City Debates 10.4 Million Budget Plan 1973
Iowa City council spent seven hours on the 1973 budget with a preliminary 10.4 million proposal down from 12.7 million. A separate capital budget will fund public improvements. The plan includes half the cost of city employee health insurance and a 17,000 request to appoint a public safety director. Mass transit faces a 136,000 deficit, though ridership remains high. A sidewalk ordinance was amended to permit sidewalk days in the business district. University bus service expansion may offer no fare and broader hours, prompting staff to seek coordination to avoid service duplication.
