Jeanette Randall recalls the Independence Depot’s 106 year history and the 1996 relocation by the Depot Committee. They moved the building about 50 feet to align with Highway 150 and now plan to finish restoration to serve Buchanan County visitors.
The Independence depot restoration advances with $500000 goal, 306 foot canopy, and 90 ton 1920 steam engine arrival planned. Funds come from state and federal grants donations with labor by volunteers. Bricks sold for memorial walkway, hoping completion in 2002 to honor local railroad workers and veterans.
A new Cedar Rapids facilities task force will hold its first meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Beems Auditorium at the public library. The board expanded the group to include community members and representatives from ALOT, labor groups, and the Chamber of Commerce to study district needs and bond timing.
Finance Commissioner Lyle Hanson will meet OSHA representatives this week to discuss the inquiry into the May death of Cedar Rapids sewer plant worker Donald J. Murphy. Murphy, 44, was found inside a safety railing around a sludge tank at the Water Pollution Control Facility and likely died from hydrogen sulfide inhalation.
