House Unit for Voting Rights Act Extension
A House Judiciary subcommittee approved a five year extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act bypassing Nixon’s broader proposal. Chairman Emanuel Celler called the extension study by voice vote and the full committee is expected to approve next week. The act banned literacy tests in seven southern states and required court approval for election changes. Nixon proposed widening the literacy test ban and removing prior approval, giving the attorney general power to block discriminatory changes. Civil rights leaders criticized the revised approach.
