President Johnson announced that 50 FBI agents will be permanently assigned to a new office in Jackson Mississippi. The office opens Friday as part of a broader push after the disappearance of three civil rights workers.
A car and a pickup collided near Oasis twelve miles northeast of Iowa City, killing Mrs. Richard Archer 31 and daughters Jean 13 and Linda 8. The Archer family and two others were injured, and the crash happened about 9 15 p m after returning from a West Branch game. The driver Robert Wright 17 and passenger Frederick Sutton 27 were treated with varying injuries. The accident left both vehicles demolished and the bodies at McGovern Dwyer funeral home.
Three Cedar Rapids taxpayers file in Linn district court to stop use of road use tax funds for the proposed Cedar Valley expressway. The suit seeks nullification of city council and clerk actions and declares 21 925 dollars in road use tax expenditure illegal. Plaintiffs are C. C. Slapnicka Joseph J. Kolarik and Walter Payn representing all city taxpayers against Cedar Rapids and city officials.
About 5000 professors call on President Johnson and both parties to back a neutralized North and South Vietnam as a federated state with international guarantees. The appeal, circulated by a nuclear policy group, argues for peace and avoidance of wider war, amid Geneva conference talks.
Heavy showers and thunder storms drenched northwest Iowa last night with fog across remaining regions. FBI agents joined Friday in the probe of a United Air Lines Viscount crash that killed 39 aboard eight miles northeast of Newport near the North Carolina line. The flight originated in Philadelphia and was bound for Huntsville Alabama with stops in Washington and Knoxville.
