Juno Mission Forges Ahead to Uncharted Jupiter Realms
NASA’s Juno spacecraft completes a risky Jupiter rendezvous after a five year 1.8 billion mile trek and a 35 minute burn. Engineers protected vital instruments with titanium shielding as the craft slows from 165000 mph to 130000 mph and enters an orbit above the planet's clouds. Beginning August, Juno will map the world beneath the storms while scientists seek a possible solid core and water in the atmosphere. The mission ends February 20, 2018, after 37 orbits, with Juno diving into Jupiter to transmit its findings.
