In San Diego Sea World scientists started a penguin colony from Adelie and Emperor penguins. Last season 14 baby Adelies were born showing progress. Emperors have not bred yet, blamed on age.
The penguins traveled from rookeries along Antarctic beaches by helicopter then pet refrigerated planes to San Diego. They were moved in a freezer truck from the airport to their freezer residence.
The facility maintains freezing temperatures and 24 hour lighting during dark days. Over 8,000 pounds of crushed ice are added daily for water, and penguins feed on it. They swim in two salt water pools to simulate home environments.
