Premature Quang Tri Move Hinted as U S Forces Close In
An unnamed field officer warned the spokesman’s claim was definitely premature. If the objective were to seize Quang Tri, the operation could be done in a day, but the aim is to stay and clear North Vietnamese forces. Sporadic fighting continued around Quang Tri as about 20 000 airborne and marine troops closed in from the south and east. At least 30 enemy graves were reported killed in several clashes Saturday. Government casualties were described as light. A separate clash occurred near outpost Checkmate guarding Hue, with heavy mortar fire and a ground attack leaving two enemy dead. Checkmate, 12 miles southwest of Hue, has changed hands three times in eight days and remained under North Vietnamese control. Officials worry rising activity may indicate an attack on Hue, shelled daily for more than a week.
