Stettinius Opens Charter Hearings with UN Peace Promise
Former Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius Jr told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the United Nations charter provides a truly effective instrument for lasting peace. He urged swift U.S. engagement and defended the five-nation security council's veto power as essential to maintaining world security. He warned that without security at home and in employment, even the UN could not prevent future wars. The charter, he said, may not be perfect but offers democratic progress and a path toward human advancement through international cooperation.
