Lawmakers weigh reforms to farm subsidy programs
Washington lawmakers press for changes to farm subsidies amid tight budgets and rising energy prices. A bipartisan plan by Rep. Kind and Rep. Flake would replace payments with savings accounts supporting farmers during low prices or poor yields, while diverting some funds to biofuels rural development and conservation. Critics warn safety nets are needed for struggling farmers, and there is no broad agreement on next steps as money constraints bite this year.
