AIDS experts meet as Africa bears epidemic center
In Johannesburg the 13th International AIDS Conference opens as Africa hosts most of the infected population. Sub-Saharan Africa holds 70 percent of 34 million infections with 11 million orphans. Uganda reports HIV declined from 14 to 8 percent after public awareness campaigns.

Drug boosts effectiveness of AIDS drug cocktails
Interleukin 2 added to HIV drug mixes improved viral suppression and CD4 T cell recovery in a two year study of 78 patients. Researchers funded by Chiron report 67 percent suppression with interleukin 2 versus 36 percent without, and CD4 levels rose 112 percent compared with 18 percent after one year. The approach is experimental and linked to the AIDS conference in Durban.

Army general accused of harassment to retire
The two star general facing charges of sexually harassing Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy has asked to retire on Sept 1, a move likely to be approved.
