Judge bars punitive damages in Iowa City bar stabbing case
Johnson County District Court Judge L Vern Robinson ruled that two men cannot claim punitive damages against three Iowa City bar owners in a 1981 stabbing case. The suits seek 1.4 million under Iowa's dram shop act alleging liquor served to Timothy Gradford. The judge noted the 1963 act allowed actual damages only, with exemplary damages unlikely under the current statute.
