Mayner Wins at Hawkeye Downs tainted by crash
The Flyin' Physician Dr Al Mayner from Winthrop edged Pokey West in a 25 lap late model stock car race before about 8000 fans at Hawkeye Downs. Mayner admitted tapping West out of the lead with five laps to go, insisting he could have caught him otherwise. West led from the pole in his 1970 Chevy as Mayner benefited from a big 454 cubic inch engine and 17 inch rain tires. West blamed the crash on losing gear from the hit.
