Negotiations to end a Cedar Rapids electricians strike resumed Tuesday after talks Monday failed to reach a satisfactory agreement. The walkout began July 1 when an 18 month contract expired. local 405 members are striking while some of the 140 union members work for seven out of town contractors who have signed accords respecting negotiators' decisions.
Deputy State Fire Marshal called the Tuesday blaze a definite arson in a large building owned by Don Staggel and Gordon Bentley. A passerby saw black smoke and oil leaking from beneath a door as tires were set alight and oil drums opened. burglars broke in and ransacked, but lack of oxygen kept the fire from spreading. Considerable damage to new cars and a portable feed mill was reported at the Don's Auto Service and Bentley's Chevrolet facility.
District Judge George C Heath sustained a motion to strike part of Iowa public safety records in the case brought by Bernard W Hitchcock of Cedar Falls challenging the suspension of his license under the point system. Hitchcock was charged with a 10 point violation on April 1, the system’s first day. The motion sought to exclude records submitted by the safety department itself.

Anna Dettbarn 98 was found dead in her Earlville home Monday from a heart attack, likely occurring Sunday afternoon. She was a member of Earlville Lutheran Church and Amyers auxiliary, survived by three sisters and several relatives. Funeral arrangements are being made at Clifton funeral home.

The body of 55 year old John Radake was found in a garage he rented at 1040 Fifth Ave. SE. Deputy Coroner Les Burianek ruled the death a self inflicted action. A neighbor at 1041 Fifth Ave. checked the garage after Radake’s employer reported he was absent from work.
Americans ate an average of 18.1 pounds of candy last year the commerce department said. Per capita consumption rose from 17.4 pounds in 1956 to the highest since 1950 when it was 18.4 pounds.
Ivan R. Woods, 41, pleaded innocent in district court to going armed with intent after trying to free his brother Arnold Woods, 48, from Marion jail. Ivan, armed with a shotgun, entered the jail but fled when officers were present and later surrendered the weapon.
Thomas G. Megan, 131, of 1111 Third St. SW, Cedar Rapids, pleaded innocent Tuesday to a drunk driving charge. Police say his car struck a tree on the lawn of the Joseph Bednar residence at 1401 Third St. SW Monday night.
A permanent injunction was issued to stop Linn County from widening a road along Leo H. Norbohm’s land 1 1/2 miles southeast of Center Point. The decree bars fence removal crop destruction and land appropriation until agreement or condemnation completes. Defendants include three county supervisors Miles P. Sutera Martin Wiley Dudley Henderson and County Engineer William H. Behrens.
John R. Zahn of Cedar Rapids files a $50,000 personal injury suit after a car bus collision on March 7 1957 involving Cedar Rapids City Lines bus driver Forrest D Farnham and Harold L Robinson at Nineteenth Street and Seventh Avenue SE. Zahn was thrown against a metal guard rail near the bus front steps. A separate $1,328.48 auto damage suit is by Mardell Rochau of Davenport against Everett Jordan for a May 11 1957 collision on Highway 30 west of Mt Vernon.
Leland and Charlotte Loughrey filed a $2850.03 promissory note suit against Richard P. English and Robert D. Jones. The will of I W Yardo, who died June 18, names his wife Irma and daughters Helen Henecke and Verna Horne as beneficiaries. Mrs Henecke was confirmed executrix.
A semi-trailer carrying 32 000 pounds of iron ingots tipped onto its right side after the load shifted while turning left onto Sixth Street SW from Sixteenth Avenue. Driver Kenneth Goodwin of Whalen escaped injury as the crash damaged the traffic signal and blocked the intersection for about four hours until 8 a.m.

Ralph Hamilton Wilson age 51 of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday after a sudden illness. Born September 17, 1892 in Independence he married Marguerite Dover on February 25, 1925 in Iowa City. Survived by wife three daughters Ralph Wilson Jr a son and a sister. He was a member of Trinity Methodist church and United Packinghouse Workers of America local 3. Services at Turner chapel with burial in Oakwood Independence.
Emil Tony Schultz aged 56 of 300 Nave NW Cedar Rapids died Monday after a long illness. Born March 27, 1902 he worked nearly 40 years in the Quaker Oats package dept. Survived by wife Margaret Jones Schultz two daughters Susan and Mary three sisters Blanche Martin Agnes Schultz Libbie Noeller two brothers William Joseph all of Cedar Rapids. Funeral at Janeba Funeral Home 2 p.m. Thursday conducted by Rev Rollin Oswald of Mt. Vernon Methodist Church. Burial Czech National. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Mrs. Rollo R. Howden died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Monday after a sudden illness. Born January 27, 1886 in Paris, France, she is survived by her husband two sons Leo P. Bergin Fallon Nevada and John Bergin Riverside California and a daughter Gloria Scoupoff Los Angeles. The body was moved from Turner chapel to Los Angeles for services and burial.
James Liston aged 39 of near Marion Cedar Rapids resident most of life died in Iowa City Monday after a long illness. Born October 10 1918 at Maquoketa he was a member of St. John's Episcopal church and the Royal Neighbors. Survived by son Warren of Inglewood California. Friends may call at Teahen chapel after 7:30 p.m. Thursday with funeral tentatively set for Friday at Cedar Memorial.
Miss Kathryn Soukup of Cedar Rapids dies after a brief illness at age 59. Born December 18, 1883 in Cedar Rapids, she is survived by her brother Robert L and sister Elizabeth Murdoch, both of Cedar Rapids. Services set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Turner Chapel with Dr. Marion H. Williams. burial at Czech National. Friends may call at the chapel.
John G. Viasaty age 81 of Twentieth Ave SW died Monday. Funeral services set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kuba funeral home and 9 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church officiated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Anthony W. Chihak. Rosary to be recited 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with visitation.

Public safety officials issued guidance on observing Ellis Boulevard NW offset center line. Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson said yellow lines mark two west lanes with curb parking on the east side from F Avenue to Ellis Lane NW. Johnson noted no passing and a 25 mph speed limit.

Jane N. Jaeger, 33 months, daughter of Celester and Mrs. Jaeger, died at University Hospitals Iowa City from burns after clothes ignited by a rubbish fire. Services set at St Luke's church Thursday at 9:30 a.m. She was born September 30 1955 and lived on a farm 4 miles north of Hopkinton. Survivors include her parents two sisters Sherry and Connie a brother James her maternal grandmother Mrs Henry Stelken of Farley and paternal grandmother Mary Jaeger of Hopkinton.
Alvin G Keyes was elected president of the Linn County Bar Association at a Tuesday Sheraton Montrose meeting. He succeeds William O Gray. Other officers named include Martin Roenig, vice president, William Bernau, secretary, and James Pickens, treasurer.
