Portia Taynton, 35, anti religious pamphlet distributor, is charged with disturbing the peace after allegedly slapping James L. Leishman, associate pastor of the Pasadena Presbyterian church, at First Methodist in Pasadena. Witnesses say he refused to let her address the congregation. A gulf hurricane pounded Padre Island and the Texas coast for two days, demolishing every house on Padre Island and capsizing an oil tanker. No fatalities were reported though widespread destruction and a 60 mile per hour wind were noted along the coast. The storm veered toward northern Mexico leaving the border area unaffected. Co. B. Porter appointed to fill Tipton clerk vacancy after A. E. Pierce resigns due to illness.
A Chicago business note reports alimony payments in the first six months of 1933 rose 7 percent from the same period in 1932. Totals were 69 547 37 dollars versus 64 461 88 dollars. Ruth Coleman, assistant director of the Cook County welfare bureau, attributes the rise to formerly unemployed husbands finding work.
