Washington Jefferson softball battled in a tense game as junior third baseman Robin Nurre delivered the winning run in the 10th inning. The Warriors edged the J-Hawks 2-1 in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference double-header at Washington Franklin Field.
In four innings Washington cruised to a 13 1 victory over Jefferson in the second game. Coach Dawn Frevert called it a great win for the program and said it would earn respect in the conference. Washington improved to 22 9 overall and 12 8 MVC.
Reserve's first baseman Yustin Jordan delivered a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Quad City River Bandits past the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The crowd cheered as Jordan's clutch blast sealed the victory and the team’s chances in the stretch run.
Austin Jordan entered in the third inning for an injured Dan Leatherman as a River Bandit making his first game with the team. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound rookie, a sixth round pick by the Pirates, delivered a key moment in a 5-4 win before 1,542 at Memorial Stadium.

Among them are teaching pros and former professionals from varied backgrounds including Jimmy Adams, Dick Clemens, Robert Desjardins, Ben Dowdey, Gayle Sanchez, Tom Storey, B Sisco, Ed Lucker, Clyde Hughey, and Ron Ferguson a retired Orlando detective who survived a 1974 murder investigation and a later shooting incident. Ferguson is paired with Clemens and Lucker in the Grading Five Open round.
Mark Carlson was named coach and general manager of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, a day after Steve Nelson left the USHL team to become an assistant at Colorado. The team was coachless for under 24 hours before the announcement.
Nelson spent one season with the USHL franchise before Carlson, 30, joins Cedar Rapids after two seasons as Northeastern assistant. Carlson aims to stamp his mark, prioritizing a blend of skill and toughness in recruiting. He previously worked at Massachusetts Lowell and Northeastern.
Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa will start for the National League in the All-Star Game at Fenway Park on July 13. McGwire, with 70 homers last season, and Sosa, leading the league with 32, are set for their 11th and 3rd All-Star appearances respectively. Tony Gwynn will miss the game with a calf injury.
